THE HISTORY OF PAST TEMPLES
 1-THE TABERNACLE OF THE CONGREGATION

The Lord said to Moses, LET THEM MAKE ME A SANCTUARY; THAT I MAY DWELL AMONG THEM.  ACCORDING TO ALL THAT I SHOW THEE, AFTER THE PATTERN OF THE TABERNACLE-Ex 25:8,9.  AND MOSES TOOK THE TABERNACLE, AND PITCHED IT WITHOUT THE CAMP, AFAR OFF FROM THE CAMP, AND CALLED IT THE TABERNACLE OF THE CONGREGATION.  AND IT CAME TO PASS, THAT EVERY ONE WHICH SOUGHT THE LORD WENT OUT UNTO THE TABERNACLE OF THE CONGREGATION, WHICH WAS WITHOUT THE CAMP-Ex 33:7.
    The tabernacle in the wilderness is called the tabernacle of the congregation.  (For more information note-Ex 25:9; 27:21; 2 Chr 1:3 and many other verses.)

2-THE FIRST REFERENCE TO A TEMPLE

The first reference in the Bible using the word temple is in 1 Sam 1:9.  SO HANNAH ROSE UP AFTER THEY HAD EATEN IN SHILOH, AND AFTER THEY HAD DRUNK.  NOW ELI THE PRIEST SAT UPON A SEAT BY THE POST OF THE TEMPLE OF THE LORD.  The word “temple,” used here, denotes a large or impressive royal room or palace.  It was at Shiloh.  It is also written...THE WOMEN THAT ASSEMBLED AT THE DOOR OF THE TABERNACLE OF THE CONGREGATION-1 Sam 2:22.  AND ERE THE LAMP OF GOD WENT OUT IN THE TEMPLE OF THE LORD, WHERE THE ARK OF GOD WAS-1 Sam 3:3.  Note both words “temple” and “tabernacle” are mentioned here.

3-SOLOMON’S TEMPLE

Solomon was called of God to build a temple.  As it is written, AND, BEHOLD, I PURPOSE TO BUILD AN HOUSE UNTO THE NAME OF THE LORD MY GOD, AS THE LORD SPAKE UNTO DAVID MY FATHER, SAYING, THY SON, WHOM I WILL SET UPON THY THRONE IN THY ROOM, HE SHALL BUILD AN HOUSE UNTO MY NAME-1 Ki 5:5.
    Solomon was building the magnificent first temple, from approximately 982 B.C. (seven years) to 975 B.C.  AND IT CAME TO PASS IN THE FOUR HUNDRED AND EIGHTIETH YEAR AFTER THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL WERE COME OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT, IN THE FOURTH YEAR OF SOLOMON’S REIGN OVER ISRAEL, IN THE MONTH ZIF, WHICH IS THE SECOND MONTH, THAT HE BEGAN TO BUILD THE HOUSE OF THE LORD.  IN THE FOURTH YEAR WAS THE FOUNDATION OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD LAID, IN THE MONTH ZIF-1 Ki 6:1,37.  THEN SOLOMON BEGAN TO BUILD THE HOUSE OF THE LORD AT JERUSALEM IN MOUNT MORIAH, WHERE THE LORD APPEARED UNTO DAVID HIS FATHER (David was Solomon’s father), IN THE PLACE THAT DAVID HAD PREPARED IN THE THRESHINGFLOOR OF ORNAN THE JEBUSITE.  AND HE BEGAN TO BUILD IN THE SECOND DAY OF THE SECOND MONTH, IN THE FOURTH YEAR OF HIS REIGN-2 Chr 3:1,2.
   There are also other reference verses on the temple: God’s promise to Solomon-1 Ki 6:11-13; dimensions of the temple-1 Ki 6:2 and 2 Chr 3:3; materials of the temple-1 Ki 6:7,9 and 2 Chr 3:5-7; the porch-1 Ki 6:3 and 2 Chr 3:4; windows-1 Ki 6:4; stories-1 Ki 6:5,6,8,10; Most Holy place-1 Ki 6:16-22 and 2 Chr 3:8,9; cherubim-1 Ki 6:23-28 and 2 Chr 3:10-13; the veil-2 Chr 3:14; the walls and floor-1 Ki 6:15,29,30; doors-1 Ki 6:31-35; completion of the temple building-1 Ki 6:14.
    When Israel was conquered by the Babylonians, the temple was destroyed, approximately 586 B.C.  AND IN THE FIFTH MONTH, OF THE SEVENTH DAY OF THE MONTH, WHICH IS IN THE NINETEENTH YEAR OF KING NEBUCHADNEZZAR KING OF BABYLON, CAME NEBUZARDAN, CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD, A SERVANT OF THE KING OF BABYLON, UNTO JERUSALEM: AND HE BURNT THE HOUSE OF THE LORD, AND THE KING’S HOUSE AND ALL THE HOUSES OF JERUSALEM, AND EVERY GREAT MAN’S HOUSE BURNT HE WITH FIRE-2 Ki 25:8,9.  Other references include, 2 Chr 36:19; Jere 39:8; 52:12-14.

4-ZERUBBABEL’S TEMPLE

Another temple (a smaller one) was built by the Jews who returned from Babylon under Zerubbabel.  BUT IN THE FIRST YEAR OF CYRUS THE KING OF BABYLON THE SAME KING CYRUS MADE A DECREE TO BUILD THE HOUSE OF GOD-Ezra 5:13, approximately 539 B.C.  NOW IN THE SECOND YEAR OF THEIR COMING UNTO THE HOUSE OF GOD AT JERUSALEM, IN THE SECOND MONTH, BEGAN ZERUBBABEL...AND THE REMNANT OF THEIR BRETHREN...FROM TWENTY YEARS OLD AND UPWARD, TO SET FORWARD THE WORK OF THE HOUSE OF THE LORD-Ezra 3:8, approximately 535 B.C.  This remained until about 19 B.C., when it was taken apart to be replaced by the much larger temple built for the Jews by Herod the Great.
    The temple sacrifices were interrupted in approximately 168 B.C., by Antiochus 1, son of Antiochus the Great, who took Palestine from a weak king of Egypt.  Antiochus 1 desecrated the temple, abolished the worship of Jehovah, and set up pagan worship.  The Jews prepared to oppose these decrees.  By approximately 64 B.C., the Jews had cleansed and rededicated the temple.  The Pharisees and Sadducees split into definite parties.

5-HEROD’S TEMPLE

     The temple that Herod built was partly to please the Jews and partly for his own glory.  THEN SAID THE JEWS, FORTY AND SIX YEARS WAS THIS TEMPLE IN BUILDING, AND WILT THOU REAR IT UP IN THREE DAYS?-Jn 2:20.
    Jesus said, VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, ALL THESE THINGS SHALL COME UPON THIS GENERATION.  BEHOLD, YOUR HOUSE IS LEFT UNTO YOU DESOLATE-Mt 23:36,38.  AND JESUS WENT OUT, AND DEPARTED FROM THE TEMPLE: AND HIS DISCIPLES CAME TO HIM FOR TO SHOW HIM THE BUILDINGS OF THE TEMPLE.  AND JESUS SAID UNTO THEM, SEE YE NOT ALL THESE THINGS?  VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, THERE SHALL NOT BE LEFT HERE ONE STONE UPON ANOTHER, THAT SHALL NOT BE THROWN DOWN-Mt 24:1,2.
      This prophecy did come to pass within “this generation.”  Within forty years of Jesus being crucified, the Temple and Jerusalem were destroyed and left desolate (“YOUR HOUSE”).  As Daniel prophesied, AND THE PEOPLE OF THE PRINCE THAT SHALL COME SHALL DESTROY THE CITY (Jerusalem) AND THE SANCTUARY (the temple)-Dan 9:26.
    The Dome of the Rock now stands on the Temple grounds.

6-SUMMARY OF ALL THE TEMPLES

7-TEMPLES YET TO COME

• Yet to come, the Tribulation temple-ref Rev 11:1,2.

• Yet to come, the Temple Jesus shall raise up during the Millennium-ref Amos 9:11; Acts 15:16,17.

8-BIBLE STATISTICS

The Bible was written by about thirty-nine persons over a period dating from about 1700 B.C. to about 100 A.D.
   KNOWING THIS FIRST, THAT NO PROPHECY OF THE SCRIPTURE IS OF ANY PRIVATE INTERPRETATION.  FOR THE PROPHECY CAME NOT IN OLD TIME BY THE WILL OF MAN: BUT HOLY MEN OF GOD SPAKE AS THEY WERE MOVED BY THE HOLY GHOST-2 Pe 1:20,21.  ALL SCRIPTURE IS GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF GOD, AND IS PROFITABLE FOR DOCTRINE, FOR REPROOF, FOR CORRECTION, FOR INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUSNESS-2 Tim 3:16.  BUT I CERTIFY YOU, BRETHREN, THAT THE GOSPEL WHICH WAS PREACHED OF ME IS NOT AFTER MAN.  FOR I NEITHER RECEIVED IT OF MAN, NEITHER WAS I TAUGHT IT, BUT BY THE REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST-Gal 1:11,12.
    Beware, for there are people that may TROUBLE YOU, AND WOULD PERVERT THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST-Gal 1:7.  Beware, that you do not turn aside UNTO ANOTHER GOSPEL-Gal 1:6, for Paul tells us, FOR DO I NOW PERSUADE MEN, OR GOD?  OR DO I SEEK TO PLEASE MEN?  FOR IF I YET PLEASED MEN, I SHOULD NOT BE THE SERVANT OF CHRIST-Gal 1:10.
    BUT THOUGH WE, OR AN ANGEL FROM HEAVEN, PREACH ANY OTHER GOSPEL UNTO YOU (other) THAN THAT WHICH WE HAVE PREACHED UNTO YOU, LET HIM BE ACCURSED (or condemned)-Gal 1:8.
    Know, that a little false doctrine can cause great harm, as it is written, A LITTLE LEAVEN LEAVENETH THE WHOLE LUMP-Gal 5:9.

We are told it is the Word of God approximately 2,500 times.

The Wycliffe Bible was the first translation of the English Bible.  John Wycliffe was responsible for initiating the translation, which was finished by John Purvey in approximately 1388 A.D.
    In approximately 1228 A.D., the Bible was divided into chapters by Stephen Langton.
    In approximately 1448 A.D., the Old Testament was divided into verses by R. Nathan.
    In approximately 1551 A.D., the New Testament was divided into verses by Robert Stephanus.

9-MOUNTAINS

MOUNT MORIAH-Gen 22:2; 2 Chr 3:1.  Abraham was told to take Isaac and offer him there for a burnt offering.  Solomon built the house of the Lord at this location.

MOUNT OF OLIVES-Zech 14:4; Mt 21:1; 24:3; 26:30, and others.  It is just east of Jerusalem and provides a beautiful, panoramic view of the city.  When Jesus returns, His feet shall stand upon the Mount of Olives.  Jesus and His disciples sat upon the Mount of Olives when He gave the Olivet discourse (Mt 24; Mk 13; Lk 21).  The night Jesus was arrested, they went out into the Mount of Olives.

MOUNT OF TRANSFIGURATION-Mt 17:1,2; Mk 9:2; 2 Pe 1:18.  The place Jesus was transfigured.  Some consider that it is Mount Tabor.

MOUNT ZION-The southwestern high hill in Jerusalem.  It came to be applied to the whole of Jerusalem, including the temple.  It is written, FROM THE LORD OF HOSTS, WHICH DWELLETH IN MOUNT ZION-Isa 8:18.  THE MOUNT OF THE DAUGHTER OF ZION, THE HILL OF JERUSALEM-Isa 10:32.

About 98 percent of all people that say they believe in Jesus Christ have never read the Bible through once.
